PSSD Evaluation

The final evaluation assessed the impact of the Private Seed Sector Development (PSSD) (2018-2024) project in Burundi on smallholder farmers’ income, productivity, and adoption of certified seeds, as well as the functioning of the seed value chain. It found that the project significantly increased the use of certified seeds, particularly for potatoes, with moderate effects for maize and little impact for beans. Demonstration plots and field trainings were the most effective interventions in encouraging adoption, as they helped farmers understand the benefits and build trust with seed suppliers. The main barriers to adoption were financial constraints, limited seed availability, and lack of information about suppliers. Overall, the adoption of certified seeds, supported by the PSSD project, has contributed to higher agricultural productivity and improved outcomes for smallholder farmers.
