Risk of an attack (threat level)

The Netherlands uses a system of threat levels that indicate the chance of a terrorist attack. Every quarter the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) publishes the current threat level for the Netherlands.

Four threat levels

The Netherlands has four ascending threat levels :

  • minimal: an attack is unlikely;
  • limited: an attack is somewhat likely;
  • substantial: an attack is likely;
  • critical: there are very strong indications that an attack will take place.

Current threat level

The NCTV website lists the current threat level in the Netherlands.

If there is an increased threat of a terrorist attack at a specific time or location, the Ministry of Security and Justice will announce this on the radio, on TV or online.
