A strong financial sector is important for the Dutch economy.  The Ministry of Finance works to make the Netherlands a world financial centre.

Dutch financial sector favourably positioned

The Dutch financial sector is well-positioned in Europe.  A wide variety of factors make the Netherlands a favoured location for financial institutions:

  • The Netherlands has traditionally been a desirable location for major financial institutions.
  • The Netherlands has modern legislation for financial sector oversight.
  • The business climate in the Netherlands is stable in every sense.
  • The country's professional population is well-educated, highly trained, and internationally oriented. 
  • In the Netherlands, knowledge and expertise, connections, and business cultures all come together to form a link between the eurozone and other financial centres in Europe and beyond.

By specialising, the Netherlands can play an important role on the financial services market in Europe and worldwide.  Opportunities for the Netherlands can be found in the following areas:

Boosting the position of the Netherlands

The Dutch Finance Ministry works actively to further boost the position of the Netherlands as a world financial centre.  Government initiatives to raise the position of the financial sector here and to improve the business climate for financial institutions in the Netherlands include the following:  

  • The Innovation Room, which foreign and domestic companies can use to more easily market their products and services in the Netherlands;
  • Asset pooling, where various financial institutions pool investment capital;
  • The Holland Financial Centre, which helps foreign financial institutions, for example, that wish to locate in the Netherlands.
