The Netherlands' military missions

The Dutch armed forces are deployed around the world to further peace and security. One of the ways in which they do this is by taking part in international missions.

During international missions Dutch troops assist with reconstruction and development in countries that are (or have been) the site of violent conflict. The Netherlands is currently participating in the following missions:

  • Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (Minusma)
  • Afghanistan – International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
The ISAF aids the Afghan government in maintaining security. The troops are also involved in the country’s reconstruction.
  • Anti-piracy in Somalia – Ocean Shield and Atalanta
The Ministry of Defence has deployed a number of ships off the coast of Somalia to assist in anti-piracy missions run by NATO and the European Union (EU).
  • South Sudan – UNMISS
The UN mission UNMISS focuses on state-building, economic development, human rights, protecting the civilian population and strengthening the security sector.

Other military missions

Beside the major military missions listed above, the Netherlands makes small contributions to other missions around the world, often in an advisory or support capacity.
