Tasks of portfolio holders

Portfolio holders administer the municipality together with the mayor. Together they form the municipal executive.

Responsibility for policy areas

The municipal council decides what specific policy portfolio – such as education, finance, housing or sport – each member of the executive will be responsible for. Each portfolio holder promotes residents’ interests in their particular policy area. They operate in consultation with civil servants working for central government and the province. They also talk to local residents, businesses and other organisations.

Tasks of the municipal executive

The municipal executive implements the decisions taken by the municipal council. The executive is also jointly responsible for implementing legislation adopted by central government and the province. Examples include the Social Support Act (WMO), Work and Social Assistance Act (WWB) and the Environmental Management Act (WM). The executive’s other responsibilities include managing the municipality’s finances and organisational matters.
