Have you built a vehicle yourself or made major modifications to an existing vehicle? If so, you must first have this vehicle approved by the RDW before it is allowed on the road. This also applies to vehicles that have not previously been registered in the European Union (EU).
Obtaining approval for a vehicle
Most vehicles have type approval. This is an approval for vehicles built in large numbers in accordance with European regulations. They can be driven on the road without further approval. However, you must have your vehicle approved if:
- your vehicle has not previously been registered in the EU (admission inspection)
- you have built your vehicle yourself (admission inspection)
- you have made major modifications to your vehicle after receiving the EU registration certificate (modification inspection).

Applying for individual approval for a vehicle
You can have your vehicle inspected at:
- an RDW inspection centre
- the RDW Product Assessment Department.
