Applying for sickness benefit or disability benefit if you are a first responder

If you previously worked as a first responder, for example for the fire brigade or ambulance service, and became sick or disabled as a result of your work, you may be eligible for sickness benefit. If your sickness benefit ends and you are still unable to work, you may be eligible for disability benefit.

If you are a first responder, you can make your own application for sickness benefit or disability benefits (in Dutch). You must do this within one year of becoming sick or disabled.

You can make a claim in writing with the Ministry of Justice and Security (JenV). Do this by sending a letter to:
