Registering for the civic integration exam

Have you lived for in the Netherlands for a long time and you now need to complete the civic integration process? This means you will have to pass a civic integration (inburgering) exam showing that you are familiar with the Dutch language and culture. You can register for the exam with the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service).

Content of the civic integration exam

The civic integration exam checks whether you know enough about Dutch society. And whether your command of the Dutch language is good enough.

Not everyone needs to take the same exams in order to integrate. The exams you take depend on the date on which you started the civic integration process. You should check which exams you need to take.

Exemption or dispensation from the civic integration obligation

In some cases, you do not need to take the civic integration exam. For example, if you:

Applying to take the civic integration exam at language level A2

Do you need to take the exam at language level A2? A2 level means that you can read very short, simple texts.

Applications for the civic integration exam must be made on the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service) website.

Requesting adaptations when taking the civic integration exam at A2 level

Do you have a disability or an illness? If so, you can request that DUO allow exam adaptations for the A2 civic integration exam.

Civic integration exam at a higher language level

You can also take an exam at a higher language level than A2. The exam can be taken at level B1 or B2. These language levels mean that you can understand and produce more difficult texts.
