If so, you can receive a monthly public transport allowance instead. This is because you cannot use your student commuting product outside the Netherlands.

Conditions for the public transport allowance for studying outside the Netherlands

You must meet certain conditions to receive a public transport allowance. For instance, you must live outside the Netherlands temporarily. The Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service) website gives all of the conditions for the public transport allowance for studying outside the Netherlands. Whether you qualify for student finance depends on your age, the course you are enroled in, where you hold citizenship and your residency status.

Request the public transport allowance for studying outside the Netherlands

You may request the public transport allowance from DUO. You must also cancel your current student travel product. Therefore, you have to go to a pick-up device. They are situated at train stations, supermarkets and convenience stores.
