The Netherlands starts implementing European Entry and Exit System (EES)

On 12 October 2025, the Netherlands will start the step-by-step introduction of the European Entry and Exit System (EES) at 2 seaport border posts: Eemshaven and IJmuiden/Amsterdam-Haven. All Schengen countries are introducing the EES, which will replace the traditional stamping of passports for non-EU nationals.

The Netherlands is opting for a step-by-step introduction, starting at smaller border posts to introduce the system in a controlled way and limit any disruptions. The seaport posts will be followed by other border posts and the smaller airports. A small-scale launch at Schiphol Airport will follow on 3 November, and the EES will be expanded there from early December.

Full implementation of the EES at all Dutch border posts is planned within a six-month period. In the meantime, passport stamping will remain in effect.

The EES applies to non-EU residents wishing to stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Among other things, the new system will contribute to better border control and countering illegal migration.
