The Netherlands is the best protected delta in the world. Yet how do we keep our country safe from high water, now and in the future, and ensure a sufficient supply of fresh water? And how can we ensure that the Netherlands remains an attractive country in which to live, work and invest?
The measures that are required to achieve this end are being prepared and developed in the Delta Programme.
The Cabinet has initiated the Water Top Sector to find sustainable solutions to flooding and freshwater shortages. This approach entails specific investments by the government in the water sector, together with the private and science sectors.
Other important issues include water governance, as outlined in the Bestuursakkoord water (Administrative Agreement on Water Affairs), water quality, drinking water and the Wadden Sea.
