Long-term exposure to asbestos fibres can result in life-threatening diseases. As long as asbestos remains firmly bound within another material it is not necessarily dangerous. Health risks arise when asbestos fibres are released into the air and can be inhaled, for instance during demolition work. The government therefore wants to prevent exposure to asbestos fibres. If asbestos removal presents a health risk, it must only be removed by a certified asbestos abatement company.
