Applying for a DigiD from the Netherlands

To manage your Government matters online such as education, healthcare or pension fund administration you need a DigiD. The DigiD (digital identity) system is used in dealings with Dutch government bodies. If you live in the Netherlands you can apply for a DigiD at the digid.nl website. To do so, you must be registered in the Basisregistratie Personen– BRP (Personal Records Database).

Applying for a DigiD

You can apply for your DigiD at the digid.nl website. After applying, you will receive a letter with an activation code within 3 working days. You must activate your DigiD within 20 days, otherwise you will have to make a new DigiD application.

Making a new DigiD application

There are some instances when you may have to make a new DigiD application, for example:

  • you have forgotten your username;
  • you have forgotten your password. There is one exception to this: if you provided your phone number or email address when you first applied, you do not need to make a new DigiD application. You can simply recover your password;
  • you have not used your DigiD for 3 years;
  • you have not activated your DigiD within 20 days.

Authorising someone else to use your DigiD for your online affairs

If someone else manages your affairs online, you can authorise them to use your DigiD. Your authorised representative can then manage your affairs online. In this case, you do not need to apply for a new DigiD.
