Request an exemption from a subject on the state examination in secondary education
Are you taking a state examination in VMBO, HAVO or VWO education? Do you already have sufficient knowledge and proficiency in some subjects from past studies? If so, you may be eligible for an exemption from one or more examination subjects. This means you will not have to take an examination for these subjects.

Request exemption from a subject on the state examination
You can request an exemption from an examination subject in writing (in Dutch) from the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service).
The state examinations are offered for:
- voorbereidend middelbaar beroepsonderwijs – VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education)
- hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs – HAVO (higher general secondary education)
- voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs – VWO (pre-academic education)
