Short statement by Prime Minister Dick Schoof regarding the fall of the government
Good afternoon,
When this government took office, its task was to tackle the major challenges facing the Netherlands:
Housing.
Livelihood security.
Public safety and national security.
Migration.
Nitrogen pollution.
In the Framework Coalition Agreement 4 parties laid down agreements which were then translated into a Programme of Government.
For many months the government has worked hard to implement that programme. But if one party lacks the will to continue, it isn’t possible to keep working together.
The cabinet discussed the situation and concluded that, with the withdrawal of the Freedom Party (PVV) from the coalition, there was insufficient support for this government in the House of Representatives.
As a consequence, I will be going to the King to tender the resignations of the PVV ministers immediately. The other ministers will stay on in a caretaker capacity. I will send a copy of the official resignation letter to the House of Representatives.
Over the past several days, I have repeatedly told the four parliamentary party leaders that, in my view, the collapse of the government was unnecessary and irresponsible.
We face major challenges both nationally and internationally and decisive action is needed now more than ever.
For our security, our resilience and our economy in a rapidly changing world.
For all the people in the Netherlands who are concerned about finding a home, about their personal finances. For farmers and growers who want to safeguard their future opportunities.
And also to get migration under control.
This all requires decisive action, not delay.
Continuing in a caretaker capacity, the government will do everything that is in the interests of the people of our country, within the scope provided by the House of Representatives.
It is a year ago that I was asked to serve as prime minister of the Netherlands. This was not a request I had ever expected to receive. I said yes, as I was convinced I could make a contribution to solving the problems that our country faces. I am still convinced of this, so together with the members of the government from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), New Social Contract (NSC) and the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), I will stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. Because life in the Netherlands and beyond goes on, and decisions must be made that we cannot afford to delay.
Thank you.
